Linux Support Absence

Frustration about Codex App being unavailable on Linux, suggestions that the target audience isn't serious developers, discussion of Wayland limitations, and workarounds using CLI tools

← Back to Codex for almost everything

The absence of a Linux app for Codex has led some users to dismiss the tool as a product for "vibecoders" rather than serious software engineers, suggesting that the platform omission alienates the very developers who understand code best. While technical discussions highlight significant hurdles like Wayland’s security restrictions for desktop automation, others suggest workarounds ranging from CLI tools like OpenClaw to experimental ports. This gap in support has ultimately sparked a debate over whether AI companies are trapped in a "Silicon Valley bubble" or if the niche market share of Linux simply makes it an impractical priority compared to macOS and Windows.

The fact that the Codex app is still unavailable on Linux makes me think the target audience isn't people who understand code.

Right. It's rather for vibecoders than for software engineers.

Maybe they could use Codex to build a Linux app...

Linux users are probably too smart to actually use these kinds of tools right now.

> Computer use is initially available on macOS, Does anyone know of a good option that works on Wayland Linux?

Goose is an option, but it is just OK. https://github.com/aaif-goose/goose

Codex-cli / OpenClaw. If you need a browser use Playwright-mcp. I can't see why I'd want an agent to click around Gnome or Ubuntu desktop but maybe that's just me?

Only on macOS though? This doesn't seem to work on Linux. Neither does Claude Cowork, not officially.

I don't see how it's possible to support Linux with Wayland, unless you limit the automation only to the browsers.

https://github.com/patrickjaja/claude-desktop-bin seems to be trying hard to but I haven't tried it.

This is why both companies are in an SF bubble.

Linux desktop users. Talk about a bubble!

There's this thing called Windows. I don't like it, and I'm sure you don't either, but it's not a Mac. Or a Linux. And it's what most actual desktop users are stuck with, still.
